Crown tiaras has been used to enhance the dignity and beauty of women. At first crown tiaras were used as a symbol of power and then later as a symbol of timeless elegance. Some stunningly delicate crown tiaras have survived from the Egyptians, but some say the crown tiara or diadem had it's origins in the laurel wreath worn by the ancient Greeks and Romans. These sometimes were decorated with gemstones, but the diamond-studded crown tiaras as we know it did not become popular until diamonds were discovered in South Africa in the early 18th century. In the old Scandinavian tradition the Bride wears a "Vasa" jeweled crown tiara to represent her purity. Queens, Monarchs, and Princesses often wore quite large crown tiaras in the 19th century (before TV), because they had to be seen from a distance by the crowds, and also because they went well with the extremely full, flowing robes that were worn on formal occasions. There are many religious traditions involving the crowning of the Bride and Groom. Perhaps the tiara is nothing more than the acknowledgement that every Bride is a Queen on her wedding day. At the 6th Annual White Tie & Tiara Ball to Benefit the Elton John Aids Foundation, celebrities like Elle Macpherson and Elizabeth Hurley proudly wore their crown tiaras.
